"This large and impressive Runic Cross stands to the west of the main cemetery entrance. In loving memory of George Carr Barker born May 26th 1821 died August 21st 1906. Eliza Frances Barker, his wife, born October 25th 1821 died March 15th 1895. Basil George Lennox Slater, grandson, born July 30th 1905 died August 29th 1906. George Carr Barker Snowdon, grandson, born November 28th 1894 died at Bailleul France April 14th 1916 of wounds received in action. Ann Snowdon, daughter, died January 20th 1925. Brian John Lennox Slater, grandson, born May 12th 1908 accidently drowned in the Rede at Reedswood Bellingham August 17th 1925. Eliza Frances, widow of Joseph Slater and third daughter of the above George Carr Barker, died August 30th 1939. Also Elizabeth Barker, second daughter, died September 27th 1941.

George Carr Barker was an Iron Merchant living with his family in Belle Grove Terrace in Newcastle. He was also a founding Director of the Tynemouth Aquarium and Summer and Winter Garden Company ( better known as Tynemouth Plaza ). His grandson George Carr Barker Snowdon was serving with the Northumberland Fusiliers 6th Btn. when he was wounded at Messines on April 13th 1916 and is buried in Bailleul Communal Cemetery in Northern France. Before serving in the Army he had lived with his mother Ann and late father William Frain Snowdon at Belle Grove Villas in Newcastle." Malcom Burn.
