5april09: A project of DC experimental musician Layne Garrett, 100 Tape Loops in Rock Creek Park was an interactive audio installation with a difference:

Tape playing devices were stuffed into crevices, tied up in trees, and otherwise embedded into the surreal "ruins" of old Capitol Building masonry in a secluded area of Rock Creek Park in Washington DC. As more people arrived, the audio tapestry grew into a weaving circus of sounds. Some audio loops were jarring, others serene, or creepy, and still others unspeakably bizarre. The squirrels and deer will be talkin' about THIS for a long time.

Th' Great Unknown and The Portraits

Sat, December 11th > Sun, Dec 26th, 2004

New works and installation by Everett Nolan and Eben Bender

"Th' Great Unknown" is a collage of portraiture, audio, lighting and installation comprising turn-of-the-century illustration and antique objects. The collaboration evokes an atmosphere of nostalgia through the fantastic and supernatural. Everett Nolan's installation produces a dissonant effect between antiquated found objects and the artist's painterly style. His application of white latex paint has two distinct qualities: the first is reminiscent of nearly obsolete sign painting practices of the last century, and is assertively human in its rough, dry-brushed appearance; the second is the coating applied to many of the objects, which performs an ironic gesture of preservation that alludes to the efforts of museums and collectors in preventing artifacts from aging. That the paint is visibly peeling and incomplete in its application is Nolan's acknowledgement that preservation is futile, particularly in the case of organic objects like the dipped pinecone. The white paint also serves as a reminder of the awkward relationship between found objects and the 'white cube' gallery space. Despite the purpose of the white gallery in giving focus to objects on exhibit, there is a parallel effect in which artifacts are divested of their context. As the majority of Nolan's work is comprised of found objects, their contexts can only be presumed. By coating them in white paint, Nolan mediates their relationship with the white walls of the gallery. By extension to this logic, the gallery space is itself a function of the exhibition. A Vancouver heritage building, the site that houses Misanthropy is an artifact in itself, and the application of white paint to its walls does little to hide its decades of collected memories and experiences. Collaged amongst the installation are Eben Bender's portraits, which reflect a variety of eras of fashion in their glamorized depictions of female subjects. Through poses and lighting techniques, Bender evokes the nostalgia that contributes to the effect of the exhibit as a whole-rather than historically located or tangibly connected to any individual experience, it evokes a collective, generic sense of nostalgia. Rather than a personal record of the artists, the installation provides more of a feeling, an affect that resonates publicly. The personality of the objects combined with sounds and smells triggers emotional response, a "coming home" effect.
