Council continues to support our Financial Assistance Program because it directly benefits local community groups who would not normally qualify for any government assistance.

This year we are distributed $84,689 across 78 projects throughout our community.

Projects range from recreational activities, painting classes, theatre productions and dance and music therapy, to cultural and teaching children environmentally sustainable practices, mental health support groups, support for people with disabilities, and arts programs.

The projects reflect the diversity of community life in our City and support a wide range of issues of concern to Council and our residents.

They are also a sign that as a community, we are working together to ensure that for many people our City of Canterbury is truly a great place to live and work.

Specialized Disaster Response Units of the US Army Reserve are conducting their annual technical training at the Florida Fire Academy in Ocala Florida, and the Guardian Center in Perry Georgia. This training is designed to ensure Reservists are prepared to augment state, local and other federal agencies in providing lifesaving assistance to the citizens of our country in the event of a disaster emergency. The training will allow our Reserve Soldiers to practice their ability to respond quickly to requests for assistance from state officials through the lead federal agency and integrate at the local level with emergency managers.

Pacific Partnership, now in its 14th iteration, is the largest annual multinational humanitarian assistance and disaster relief preparedness mission conducted in the Indo-Pacific. Each year, the mission team works collectively with host and partner nations to enhance regional interoperability and disaster response capabilities, increase stability and security in the region, and foster new and enduring friendships in the Indo-Pacific. The U.S. Coast Guard's representatives for the Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI) portion shared best-practices in emergency management, search and rescue, and boat operations with the RMI Sea Patrol, Police and First Responders. Subject matter expert exchanges were conducted in Majuro, Kwajalein and Ebeye. All photos by Kevin Cooper, James Garland or Luke Berghuis.

Baghdad marks International Volunteer Day

Baghdad, 09 December 2017 - The United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), in collaboration with the Mayoralty of Baghdad, marked today the International Volunteer Day in a ceremony at the Al-Zawraa Park in Baghdad.

International Volunteer Day (IVD) mandated by the UN General Assembly, is held each year on 5 December. It is viewed as a unique chance for volunteers and organizations to celebrate their efforts, to share their values, and to promote their work among their communities, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), United Nations agencies, government authorities and the private sector.

The event was addressed by Dr. Ali Al-Attar, Prime Minister’s Youth Advisor, and by Samir Ghattas, Director of UNAMI Public Information Office, as well as by representatives of the Office of the Mayor of Baghdad and volunteer organizations.

Dr. Al-Attar praised the volunteers as an important partner in the process of building their country and encouraged them to continue their good work.

Mr. Ghattas said the commemoration was to show appreciation and increase awareness about the work of volunteers who “are driven by a sense of dedication and their passion to assist those in need.”

IVD 2017’s theme - #VolunteersActFirst. Here. Everywhere - recognizes the contributions of volunteers as first responders in times of crisis. Volunteers are present, all around us, answering calls in times of need, helping save lives today, and supporting those who want to continue living their lives with dignity tomorrow. Risking their lives every day to care for people affected by conflict, violence and humanitarian crises, volunteers brave many dangers to help others, driven by the desire to make a difference in the face of human suffering. This year, IVD promotes the contributions of such volunteers at the local, national and international level.

After the ceremony, few groups of volunteers set out to selected neighborhoods of the Iraqi capital on a cleaning campaign as part of their work to raise awareness to volunteering.

Every year, over 6,500 UN Volunteers serve with UN entities in some of the most challenging environments across the world, and 12,000 UN Online Volunteers complete over 20,000 assignments online through the UNV Online Volunteering service.
