Ashtabula Harbor Light (also known as Ashtabula Light) is a lighthouse in Ashtabula, Ohio. The present Ashtabula Light is the fourth to be located here. The original lighthouse was built in 1836 and was followed by other structures in 1876 and 1905. The present lighthouse was moved to the north end of the west Ashtabula breakwater in 1916. The tower stands 40 feet above Lake Erie. Ashtabula Light was the last Great Lakes light to be manned and was finally automated in 1973. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

After the Z train cleared, it was the empty oil train's turn to use the century old bridge over the lake. The DPU is about to disappear into the fog as they cruise west for another load of Bakken crude. We had been here for less than an hour and it was already well worth the early morning drive.

The longest covered bridge in the U.S. is of Pratt Truss construction. Engineering and structural design was done by John

W. Smolen, Jr. (former county engineer) and architectural design was done by Timothy J. Martin (current county engineer). The bridge was dedicated on Aug. 26, 2008. It is 613’ long and stands

93’ above the Ashtabula River. With a clear width of 30’,

Rolling west towards the NP diamond, NS train 15M with its unique powerset glides over the original NKP Trestle just east of town. This one is still safe from replacement... for now...

For the second time in three days, the UP Rio Grande heritage unit leads NS #206 across the trestle at Ashtabula.

The Ashtabula lift bridge (also known as the West Fifth Street bridge) is a Strauss bascule bridge that carries Ohio State Route 531 over the Ashtabula River in the harbor of Ashtabula, Ohio.

In 1925, the bridge was constructed by a Cleveland firm, Wendell P. Brown, for $179,000. The lifting action depends on electric motors and a massive concrete counterweight. It is one of only two of its type that remain in service in the state of Ohio, and the only one extant in the state highway system.

Ashtabula Carson & Jefferson S2 107 has been put out to pasture and is slowly rusting away in downtown Jefferson. It was built as Nickel Plate 45, later Fairport Painesville & Eastern 107. I got a few cab rides on this locomotive when I was in high school.

I am not daring enough to walk the breakwater to get closer.

Lake Erie - Ashtabula Ohio – Wednesday, March 26, 2008

With no power, I made all my meals and coffee on a gas log fire – LOL! Slow, but it worked. Going through flickr withdrawl, my hands were shaking so it was hard to stir dinner – LOL!

I was out photographing covered bridges and on the next to the last bridge I saw this beautiful tree so I just photographed it when I got done with the bridge! Pat

High above the Ashtabula River in downtown Ashtabula, NS train 14M rolls east towards Buffalo with the Conrail heritage locomotive on the point. Ironically, Conrail used to go through Ashtabula on the former New York Central main line, which was a little over a mile north of here.

Uplifting to see the unfrozen, lush views, as well as getting to happily pull over for farm equipment again (I miss it since it means planting/harvest seasons!)

View is East of the dam, looking North. The NCT runs on the highway parallel with this gravel road, heads towards the North side of the dam that is straight ahead, and then the trail heads West, along the river.

It has been so fantastic to have open lakes and rivers again! The movement and the sounds are so full of life and yet very tranquil. I've missed them very much since last fall šŸŒŠšŸ˜„

NS 206 passes the last surviving NKP signals on the Lake Erie District at NP in Ashtabula, OH.

Ashtabula County Ohio has 17 covered bridges which is the most in any Ohio county. It also has the world's longest wooden covered bridge. This is the circa 1868 Harpersfield Bridge across the Grand River. A flood in 1913 destroyed half of the bridge and it was repaired in steel.

The former NKP single track mainline mostly parallels the former NYC double track mainline across Ohio. In some places they are directly next to each other. With the NYC being built first, there are places where the NKP takes a route farther from Lake Erie that requires higher trestles across the larger rivers than the lower level NYC. Ashtabula is one of those places where the NKP crossing of the Ashtabula River is more than a mile from the NYC requiring a much higher trestle. This westbound view is obscured by foliage much of the year and even more so now although I haven't been there since the bridge was replaced. But in December 2002 with no leaves on the trees, this view of train 145 was possible.
