Four die on motorway

(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, March 4.

A pregnant mother and three of her children were killed today when the car they were travelling in spun out of control, veered across the median strip came to rest in the path of oncoming of the north-western motorway, and traffic.

Late tonight the father of the dead children was in the respiratory unit at Auckland Hospital. He was understood to be dangerously ill.

Two more of his children —one a boy aged about two years, and the other a 5-year-old girl—were also in the car. They were both in Auckland Hospital late tonight, but their condition was not known.

Police would not release the names of the family because the bodies, and those injured, had not been positively identified.

However, it was known that the three children who died were boys—one a baby, and the others aged 7 and 8 years.

The car in which the family was travelling was a tangled wreck when it was towed away from the motorway tonight. The front of the vehicle was pushed in while the rear and roof were completely smashed.

Blood coated the back seat where it is believed the children were sitting. Various articles lay strewn about the inside of the vehicle.

Mr R. O’Connell, who was the first ambulance driver at the scene, said later: “It was a shocking thing. Bodies were strewn everywhere.

“Everyone travelling in the car was thrown out. They were lying all over the road. Three people, including the mother, were dead when we arrived and another child was dead when the ambulance got to hospital."

Mr O’Connell said three other ambulances and a rescue unit arrived shortly before he left for Auckland Hospital with the two most seriously injured children.

“It was difficult to know where to start,” he said. “We didn’t know how many people were injured—or where they were.”

It is believed that the car was travelling in the southbound lane of the motorway, and that it “bounced” several feet in the air on hitting the concrete verge and smashed down on to the north-bound lane, throwing out all the occupants.

Seconds later a northbound car, unable to avoid the obstacle, crashed into the side of the vehicle. The driver, Arthur Dion Albert Warren, of 9 Lynhurst Road. Te Atatu South, suffered a deep laceration to the neck in the collision and required hospital treatment.

Two other vehicles struck the two cars, but no-one travelling in them was injured.

On 11 June 2022 the new National Museum opened in Oslo. This is the largest museum in the Nordics. The new museum now consists of the collections of the former National Gallery, the Museum of Contemporary Art, and the Norwegian Museum of Decorative Arts and Design.

The new museum has a permanent exhibition of about 6 500 objects. Design, arts and crafts, fine art as well as contemporary art will be exhibited alongside each other. As such, the permanent exhibition highlights interesting connections between different collections that previously have been on show at three different museums. Additionally, audiences will be able to see the most famous paintings by the Norwegian painter Edvard Munch, including The Scream (1893) and Madonna (1894).

The building was designed by Kleihues + Schuwerk Gesellschaft von Architekten, with emphasis on dignity and longevity over sensationalist architecture. Great care was given to achieve a balance with the museum’s surroundings and the existing monuments in the area, such as Oslo City Hall and Akershus Fortress.

The most eye-catching feature of the new museum is the large, illuminated exhibition hall on top of the building. It will be used for temporary exhibitions.

The rooftop terrace offers a unique view of the inner Oslo fjord. The square in front of the main entrance has become an urban meeting place, with benches and a café that invites you in to take a rest.
