The U.S. Capitol Grounds features a collection of more than 4,800 trees throughout the entire 274-acre Capitol complex. Some of the oldest and most majestic trees were planted during the tenure of Frederick Law Olmsted Sr. in the 56-acre area directly surrounding the Capitol building known as Capitol Square.

Approximately 45 of Olmsted's trees remain today, having endured more than a century of urban life on the front stage of American democracy.

While record setting heat and humidity engulfed the nation's capital this summer, the Architect of the Capitol (AOC) celebrated Christmas in July by embarking on an adventure to select the 2024 #CapitolChristmasTree. 🌲

The AOC starts planning for each Christmas tree more than a year and a half in advance of the actual tree selection. This year, the tree will be coming from the U.S. Forest Service - Tongass National Forest in Southeast Alaska. At more than 16.8 million acres, it is the largest national forest in the country. It is also the largest remaining temperate rainforest in the world.
