Angel Fish

At Hanover Sea Life Centre, Germany. Taken with a Nikon D40 and a 35mm prime lens

Something enlightening on a grey, rainy day... captured with my NIKON D5100. Couldn't find the higher resolution original anymore...

Fragments of 15th century Norfolk School glass collected into the lower part of a window in the south aisle. Most of the figures are feathered musician angels, some perhaps originating from tracery lights judging by their small scale.

St Agnes's church at Cawston ranks as one of the very finest in a county well endowed with so many fine churches. It is most celebrated for its beautiful nave roof (complete with carved angels) and the remarkable rood screen, which retains its row of painted saints, some of which are of unusually high quality.

Most of the building is of 15th century date and its lofty west tower (curiously lacking a parapet with a slightly odd 'flat-top' look) is a landmark for miles around. Within the nave ceiling immediately impresses the visitor with its richness of carved detail, a masterpiece of medieval carpentry. There is further splendour to enjoy in the south transept ceiling, where not only are there many carved bosses but the whole roof retains most of its original colouring.

The windows are mostly clear glazed, which at least allows us to appreciate the surviving furnishings in better light. All the remains of the church's original stained glass is collected into one of the windows on the south side and gives a taste of what has vanished from the expanses of glazing.

The church is happily kept open and welcoming to visitors and shouldn't be missed, being (along with nearby Salle) amongst the very best that East Anglia can offer the avid church-crawler.

This beautiful angel was a gift from our friend Gary.

Malo.

Bueno.

I don't often share pics of the kids for public viewing, but I liked these from today.

Looks can be deceiving. He's not always this sweet, but he sure knows how to work a camera. :)

A (not so) Weeping Angel.

Restored roof angel in the nave. The original medieval angels were mutilated by iconoclasts after the Reformation so their present appearance is the result of 19th century restoration (all heads, hands and wings were replaced, though in some cases the bodies are original, being integrated into the hammer-beam roof structure).

One the absolute highlights of my visit, St Edmund's church in Southwold is one of -the most impressive parish churches in the country. Arriving late in the afternoon I was delighted to find the church still open and lose myself in its beautiful interior.

The building dates from the latter half of the 15th century and makes an assertive statement, all grandeur and civic pride on a grand scale. Great Perpendicular traceried windows punctuate the walls of the entire edifice and make it gloriously light inside (mostly plain glazed as no original glass survives and wartime bombing removed what the Victorians put in).

Within the eye is drawn to the hammerbeam roof, adorned with angels (though all are partially or wholly Victorian replacements for the originals that were mutilated by iconoclasts). The chancel beyond (structurally continuous) adds to the effect further with its ceiling painted in a heavenly shade of blue. A canopy of honour is created between the two halves with painted figures of angels, overpainted by restorers but stylistically clearly close to the original work underneath.

This ceilure of course added emphasis to the rood, long since vanished alas but the screen that supported it remains and is the most remarkable feature of the church, extending its entire width (though the screens in the aisles could be identified as separate additions). All the lower panels retain their sequence of late medieval painted figures including an unusual sequence of angels, but sadly all have been defaced by iconoclasts, most likely during the reign of Edward VI when the biggest militant purge of church artwork occurred. The quality and richness of detail however is still apparent.

The choir retains some fine medieval carved woodwork including choir stalls (the misericords are disappointingly plain designs, but the armrests feature more lively details). Ornate screens enclose this space on either side.

This vast church requires time to soak up its atmosphere and bask in its beauties, it is one of the loveliest buildings one could hope to visit and will reward any visitor to this pictureque seaside town, being generally kept open and welcoming within reasonable hours.

HAPPY FATHER'S DAY DADDY!

The Christmas Angels have been used as holiday decorations in Monterey, California, since 1956, when the first angels were designed by artist Erica Franke.

An admirer of Mexican folk art, she fashioned 88 angels after the somewhat primitive style used by the priests in California missions to teach Christianity to Indians. These angels had brightly colored clothing, dark skin, and somber expressions.

In 1970 some of the angels were sold and the others were restored, with some changes to skin tones, hair and eye color, and facial expressions.

In 2001 the Monterey Cultural Arts Commission commissioned the original artist (now an octogenarian named Erica Barton Haba) to create ten new angels. Two of them hang on Pacific House in the Custom House Plaza near Monterey's Fisherman's Wharf.
