My friend strikes a pose as we stop off at a viewpoint with magical scenery on the road from Srinagar to Gulmarg. The magical scene is actually behind me now (see previous pictures in this album), but my friend made this more of a chance to shoot some selfies, once I was done shooting the magical scene from this viewpoint. While the magical scene of the valley appeared earlier in this album (see previous pictures), what you do see here is a pleasant town in the distance in the valley below- blurred due to the bokeh. I had features of that pleasant town in the valley earlier in this album as well. (Gulmarg, Kashmir, India, Apr. 2024)
Behind me is quite a line of vehicles lining up to catch the magical scene from the viewpoint on the Srinagar to Gulmarg road. The magical scene (see previous pictures earlier in this album) is what I thought was of a glacier with a glacial stream running down from it. (Gulmarg, Kashmir, India, Apr. 2024)
As we make our way back to Srinagar after a rather disappointing trip to Gulmarg, for reasons I explained earlier in this album, we stopped once again at the viewpoint we had stopped earlier in the day (see previous pictures earlier in this album). I looked down and spotted this pleasant little town nestled deep down in the valley. I couldn't make out the name of the town, but aren't those residents truly blessed to be living amidst such gorgeous Alpine scenery! I love the conifers running up the mountain slope. (Gulmarg, Kashmir, India, Apr. 2024)
In the end, our memories of Gulmarg were limited to this scene, which was the first thing we saw when we reached the little Alpine town. Rain clouds seemed to threaten to stop play in Gulmarg- luckily they didn't. We returned to Srinagar later in the day after a rather disappointing trip to Gulmarg here, thanks to a mandatory requirement in Gulmarg that made it obligatory for us to use only a local taxi within the area, and with their extortionate rates quoted, we had to spend all our time there only walking around the parking lot, taking selfies. The famous Gulmarg Gondola too was fully booked for the rest of the day, so no luck there either. Oh well. Anyway, the Gulmarg trip is behind us now, we are now driving back to Srinagar, and stopped to take some pictures of the Alpine scenery along the way.(Gulmarg, Kashmir, India, Apr. 2024)
As we make our way back to Srinagar after a rather disappointing trip to Gulmarg, for reasons I explained earlier in this album, we stop for a quick photo session and yet another selfie in a public park on the Srinagar to Gulmarg highway with a long lookout point running along it's length. I looked down and spotted this pleasant little town nestled deep down in the valley. I couldn't make out the name of the town, but aren't those residents truly blessed to be living amidst such gorgeous Alpine scenery! I love the conifers running up the mountain slope. Agriculture in the valley on the way from Srinagar to Gulmarg in Kashmir, India. Of course, we still need to climb a good deal to get to Gulmarg- this is just the beginning of the climb, so that valley is not so deep down as yet. Could not make out if these are fruit or vegetable farms, but the yellow fields in the distance are definitely mustard fields. We stopped at one on the way back for some selfies amidst the bright yellow mustard flowers- see subsequent pictures later in this album. (Gulmarg, Kashmir, India, Apr. 2024)
A small town nestled in a valley on the way to Gulmarg from Srinagar in Kashmir, India. Unlike the road to Pahalgam, which was relatively flat, the road to Gulmarg involves some pretty steep inclines and winding mountain roads. On the way, I was enamoured of this delightful little town nestled in a valley down below. Of course, as you can see, the valley is not too deep as we have just started climbing, but I liked the Apline scenery and those lovely little houses with sloped roofs scattered in the valley. (Gulmarg, Kashmir, India, Apr. 2024)

Beautiful Alpine scenery seen from a public park in Pahalgam in Kashmir, India. This is of course in another park across the street- that park does promise better scenery but seems to require one to be physically fit and the terrain seems to be steeply graded. We did consider entering that park anyway, but did not as a huge group of tourists had just descended upon it and was lining up for tickets. We had seen much of the scenery in that park from here anyway. At any rate, a big of zoom caught the star attraction in that park- this splendid snow covered mountain peak. Pahalgam is located in the Lidder Valley, which is part of the Great Himalayan range. Notes and more pictures about Pahalgam appear elsewhere in this album. (Pahalgam, Kashmir, India, Apr/ May 2024)

Beautiful Alpine scenery from a public park in Pahalgam in Kashmir, India. As you can see, apart from the green grass, most of the bush in the park are fairly barren- meaning devoid of flowers etc. This is a bit off season for the flora in Srinagar- in fact I was disappointed that all the apple orchards, saffron fields and chilly (hot pepper) bushes and lavender fields were all devoid of flowers or fruit (as the case may be)- it's off season, come back in September, they all said. Pahalgam is located in the Lidder Valley, which is part of the Great Himalayan range. Notes and more pictures about Pahalgam appear elsewhere in this album. (Pahalgam, Kashmir, India, Apr/ May 2024)

The glacier that runs from Jungfraujoch is the Aletsch Glacier (Grosser Aletschgletscher).
It is the longest glacier in the Alps, stretching about 23 kilometers (14 miles) from Jungfraujoch down into the Aletsch region of the Valais. The glacier is part of the Jungfrau-Aletsch UNESCO World Heritage Site and plays a crucial role in the region’s ecosystem.
The Aletsch Glacier is fed by smaller glaciers, including the Ewigschneefäld, and is flanked by peaks such as the Jungfrau (4,158 m), Mönch (4,107 m), and Eiger (3,970 m). However, like many glaciers worldwide, it is retreating due to climate change.
The Aletsch Glacier (Grosser Aletschgletscher) begins at Jungfraujoch.
At Jungfraujoch (3,454 m), the glacier originates from the Ewigschneefäld (Eternal Snow Field), a large snow-covered plateau between the Jungfrau, Mönch, and Trugberg mountains. From there, the Aletsch Glacier flows down into the Aletsch Arena in the Valais.
It is the longest and largest glacier in the Alps, extending about 23 km (14 mi) and covering approximately 79 square kilometers. It plays a significant role in the Jungfrau-Aletsch UNESCO World Heritage Site and is a major attraction for visitors exploring the region.
The best viewpoints are from the Eggishorn, Bettmerhorn, and Moosfluh.
The best viewing points from near Fiesch are at Eggishorn (2,927 m) – which offers the most complete panoramic view of the entire Aletsch Glacier from its source at Jungfraujoch down to the Massa Gorge.
You can get there by taking the Fiesch–Eggishorn cable car via Fiescheralp.
Bettmerhorn (2,647 m) is another fantastic viewpoint, slightly lower but still offering a sweeping view of the glacier.
You can get there via a cable car from Bettmeralp.
Moosfluh (2,333 m) is a lower viewpoint but still a great place to see the Aletsch Glacier.
You can get to Moosfluh by cable car from Riederalp.
Summary of Viewing Locations:
At Jungfraujoch, as this photo shows, you stand on the glacier itself, but the view is more about being on the ice rather than seeing the full length of the glacier.
Belalp is another great viewing point, but its further away from Fiesch. If you want the classic postcard view of the Aletsch Glacier, Eggishorn is the best option!

Several stops later, we finally pulled into Gulmarg. Thunderclouds threaten to stop play- luckily they did not strike- they were limited to the mountain tops only. Gulmarg, also known as Gulmarag in Kashmiri, is a town, hill station, tourist destination, skiing destination, and a notified area committee in the Baramulla district in Kashmir, India. Gulmarg is located at a distance of some 31 km from Baramulla and 49 km from Srinagar. (Gulmarg, Kashmir, India, Apr. 2024)
The thunderclouds in Gulmarg obscure the mountains, luckily there was no rain. Once our driver parked his car, there were several disappointments in store for us. First, we could not drive around the sights of Gulmarg, it was mandatory to use a local taxi, and the rates were extortionate, to say the least. They were quoting rates from INR 4,000 to 6,000 for an one hour ride, trying to justify it by saying they can only only four months in a year, the rest of the year, it's snow and they cannot operate. Second, the famous Gulmarg gondola ride was fully booked for the rest of the day. So in short, we had to spend all our time in Gulmarg merely walking around, taking selfies. Oh well. To stand here on the Jungfraujoch Viewing Deck overlooking Europe's longest Glacier had long been a bucket list objective but to do it at near 37 degrees Celsius was not quite how I envisaged it happening.
With the Aletsch Glacier shrinking daily sadly it may not be an option for future generations.

The glacial cirque of the Aletsch Glacier at Jungfraujoch is framed by several prominent mountain peaks. On either side of the glacier's upper cirque, the key peaks are:
Mönch (4,107 m) – Located to the north of the Aletsch Glacier, this peak forms part of the trio of famous mountains in the Bernese Alps (Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau).
Jungfrau (4,158 m) – Situated to the west, this peak towers above the Jungfraujoch and is one of the defining summits of the region.
Gross Fiescherhorn (4,049 m) – Located to the east, this peak is part of the Fiescherhorn group and rises above the eastern flank of the Aletsch Glacier.
Trugberg (3,933 m) – A lesser-known but significant peak located south of the Jungfraujoch and in the middle of the glacial basin.
These peaks enclose the upper Aletschfirn, which merges with the other tributary glaciers to form the massive Great Aletsch Glacier, the longest glacier in the Alps.
