I am now on a viewing platform at the viewpoint on the Srinagar to Gulmarg road. To my left (blurred by the bokeh) is a magical scene (see previous pictures earlier in this album) of what I thought was of a glacier with a glacial stream running down from it. (Gulmarg, Kashmir, India, Apr. 2024)

the sound of music was filmed in salzburg surroundings but the scenery visible from innsbruck is even more dramatic

Alpine scenery on the road to Gulmarg in Kashmir, India. With a rather disappointing trip to Gulmarg now done, thanks to a mandatory requirement in Gulmarg that made it obligatory for us to use only a local taxi within the area, and with their extortionate rates quoted, we had to spend all our time there only walking around the parking lot, taking selfies. The famous Gulmarg Gondola too was fully booked for the rest of the day, so no luck there either. Oh well. Anyway, the Gulmarg trip is behind us now, we are now driving back to Srinagar, and stopped to take some pictures of the Alpine scenery along the way.(Gulmarg, Kashmir, India, Apr. 2024)

As we make our way back to Srinagar after a rather disappointing trip to Gulmarg, for reasons I explained earlier in this album, we stop for a quick photo session and yet another selfie in a public park on the Srinagar to Gulmarg highway with a long lookout point running along it's length. I looked down and spotted this pleasant little town nestled deep down in the valley. I couldn't make out the name of the town, but aren't those residents truly blessed to be living amidst such gorgeous Alpine scenery! I somehow thought the town in the valley had a sort of European feel to it- maybe due to the Alpine setting, type of cottages in the town and the steeply sloping roofs! The green building in the centre is a mosque, however. I was fascinated to note that every mosque in Kashmir seemed to be shaped differently. (Gulmarg, Kashmir, India, Apr. 2024)

A selfie spot overlooking the Gulmarg Valley in Kashmir, India. As my friend (the one with the jacket) and I were takinf this picture, a family from south India stood next to us. Although the ladies in that group are wearing more modern attire, the old man in the picture seems to still prefer to go around in his dhoti (sarong). Wonder how he manages in that cold. These selfie spots have sprung up at tourist spots all across Kashmir. I have already photographed them at the Dal Lake in Srinagar and at Pahalgam. (see Srinagar and Pahalgam albums). Be that as it may, once we reached Gulmarg, there were several disappointments in store for us. First, we could not drive around the sights of Gulmarg, it was mandatory to use a local taxi, and the rates were extortionate, to say the least. They were quoting rates from INR 4,000 to 6,000 for an one hour ride, trying to justify it by saying they can only only four months in a year, the rest of the year, it's snow and they cannot operate. Second, the famous Gulmarg gondola ride was fully booked for the rest of the day. So in short, we had to spend all our time in Gulmarg merely walking around, taking selfies. Oh well. This captivating landscape photograph captures the tranquil beauty of Kleine Scheidegg, Switzerland. The composition features a serene pond reflecting the majestic mountain backdrop, partially shrouded in clouds. The foreground showcases lush greenery and a rustic wooden cabin, enhancing the sense of peaceful isolation. The interplay of light and shadow adds depth, while the vibrant colors evoke a sense of calm and connection to nature. This image tells a story of serenity and the breathtaking allure of the Swiss Alps.

The Coat of Arms and Flag of Bern

Design

The coat of arms of Bern features a black bear walking diagonally across a yellow and red background.

The bear is facing left (heraldic dexter) with its tongue, claws, and penis painted red (a distinctive heraldic feature).

The background consists of two diagonal stripes, one yellow (gold) and one red.

Symbolism

The Bear (Bär in German)

The bear has been a symbol of Bern since the city's founding in 1191 by Duke Berchtold V of Zähringen.

According to legend, Berchtold vowed to name the city after the first animal he hunted in the area, which turned out to be a bear.

Since then, the bear has been the official emblem of Bern, appearing on flags, coins, and even in the city's famous Bear Park (Bärenpark).

Red and Yellow Background

The red and yellow colors are traditional Bernese heraldic colors.

They reflect Bern’s historical association with the House of Zähringen, a powerful noble family in medieval Switzerland.

The Bernese Flag

The flag of Bern is simply a square version of the coat of arms.

It is one of the most recognized cantonal flags in Switzerland.

You can see it prominently displayed in Bernese towns and villages, including in the Bernese Oberland (which includes Grindelwald).

I try to hide my disappointment by taking a selfie in the Gulmarg Valley against the threatening thunder clouds, which obscure the mountains. Luckily there was no rain.
