ABOARD USS CURTIS WILBUR (DDG 54), At sea (June 7, 2013) - Chief Engineman Cordon Phillips facilitates a commemorative presentation on the mess deck aboard the guided missile destroyer USS Curtis Wilbur (DDG 54) about the Battle of Midway, fought June 2-7, 1942 during World War II. Curtis Wilbur, forward deployed to Yokosuka, Japan as part of the U.S. Navy’s Forward Deployed Naval Force, is currently underway participating in Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training (CARAT) exercise Thailand 2013. More than 1,200 Sailors and Marines are participating in CARAT Thailand. U.S. Navy ships participating in the exercise include the dry cargo and ammunition ship USNS Washington Chambers (T-AKE 11), Tortuga with embarked U.S. Marine Corps landing force, diving and salvage vessel USNS Safeguard (T-ARS 50) with embarked Mobile Diving and Salvage Unit (MDSU) 1, and the guided missile destroyer USS Curtis Wilbur (DDG 54). MALAYSIA (June 21, 2013) Marines assigned to the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit aboard the forward deployed amphibious dock landing ship USS Tortuga (LSD 46) use amphibious assault vehicles to advance on a training site off the coast of Malaysia during Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training (CARAT) 2013. As part of the AFLOAT recovery project, ephemeral artist Sue Berry joined with each community to create a temporary public artwork using items that workshop participants brought along together with objects found.These footprints symbolically connected the communities and enable people to discuss their experience of the 2010/2011 floods through art and community building.

We have had enough rain that the pond's spillway is in use. What a change from the mudflat of just a few weeks ago.

 

This morning I saw something I've never encountered before. Ants mounded up and afloat, piled up, I think, on leaves and on each other. But, who could tell? Without capsizing them, of course. The water must have risen fast ...

 

I left them alone, but now I'm wondering how long and how far they might float.

 

I wish the photograph were better. My go-to lens (24-105mm) is visiting Canon at the moment. with the 30mm I couldn't get close at all. This image, however, is not cropped very much. I was more interested in the patterns than individual ants.

At the formal gardens, in the pool, beneath the waterfall cascading from Diana's Fountain: A single azalea blossom riding on the surface tension of the water; driven by breezes and a gentle current from the fountain it made one revolution of the pool in 17 minutes.
