I woke to a morning of misty conditions. We don't get too many days like this I thought to myself, so sod it, stuff work, I'm off to the woods. It was glorious and also feeling very autumnal

336) Abbotts Babbler

Abbott's Babbler, Malacocincla abbotti, Rimba Riang

This species is widely distributed along the Himalayas in South Asia and extending into the forests of Southeast Asia. They are short-tailed and stout birds which forage in pairs in dense undergrowth close to the ground and their presences is indicated by their distinctive calls. It is common across much of its large range. It is seen in the understory of broadleaved evergreen forest, forest edge, secondary growth and scrub. Abbott's babbler usually moves around in pairs close to the ground.

Even on a wet day the tiny rural church of St Martin is in an idyllic location in the Cotswolds above Winchcombe. It’s completely hidden from the nearby road and stands on the sloping crest of a high hill, with views across green fields and the valley below. The south door is a very simple Romanesque style arch.

Located in Charlton Abbots, the church dates to the 13th century and the name of the village harkens back to its association with the monks of nearby Winchcombe Abbey.

Mixed series of five. The woodland turned up a few more woodland birds yesterday besides the Goldcrest. At the same time I was also watching a Nuthatch, Chaffinch and a Treecreeper. I did not know which way to turn as they were all around me.

A recent colour neg acquisition showing 45006 departing from Newton Abbot, the sleeve in which the neg came had written the loco, location and a date, but this must be incorrect as it showed 09/08/87, which 11 months after the loco was withdrawn. Maybe I misread, or it was mis-written on the sleeve (which I've now disposed of) and unfortunately the Rail Gen archive doesn't have an entry for 09/08/82. Still a lovely shot though.

Haughmond Abbey near Shrewsbury on Monday 17th July 2023. The west side of the abbey showing the abbot’s hall with what would have been an impressive stained-glass window. The ruin is extensive if a little isolated, and only gets a brief overview on the English Heritage website.

Built in 1913, the Abbot Church is in great condition for its age. A typical one room church with an outhouse.

I don't know whether back in 1986 these units would have been employed on stopping services on the GWR mainline or perhaps on the Paignton branch.

800308 gets ready to depart Newton Abbot with the 1A98 1905 Paignton to Paddington.

This is one of those unplanned shots whilst I was awaiting the arrival of the Baglan Bay to Hackney Yard empty logs test run which was booked to run into Newton but actually didn't. Still ...3 hours stood in the cold never hurt anyone.

Arrived in the Lake District to very wet weather last Monday morning, the forecast for the afternoon looked promising so we headed to Abbots Bay at the Southern end of Derwentwater, finally after waiting for a couple of hours for the rain and cloud to clear the sun came out and lit the bay up giving some lovely light and reflections.

Series of two. Two delightful territorial Robins making sure I was just passing through.

A burst of sunshine on an otherwise cloudy afternoon greets 44806 as it works away from the speed restriction just south of Goathland. Seen from the Abbots House campsite on the Saturday of the NYMR Steam Gala.

Abbot House is a beautiful ‘A’ listed building, dating back to at least the 16th Century. It’s situated within Dunfermline’s Heritage Quarter and is steeped in the rich history of Scotland’s ancient capital. The house is instantly recognisable by its colour and is known fondly as the ‘pink hoose’ by locals.
