CO 159

San Luis, CO (Costilla County)

On April 15, 1851, the Plaza de San Luis de la Culebra was established. Not only is this town Colorado's earliest permanent settlement, it represents a culture important to Colorado's history; the Spanish. The significance is more than just historical, for while the basic way of life is and remains Spanish, over the years numerous immigrants have been, assimilated, a process which, it should be noted, is still going on. The result is an intermingling of various cultures into what at first may seem a closed society, but whose members simply chose to perpetuate Spanish tradition, as a result of the way of life, the language and simple geographical placement.

The business now known as Romero's Store (Photo #7) was founded by Dario Gallegos in 1857. Arcadio Salazar, who had previously worked as a clerk, married Gallegos' daughter in 1874 and soon after was made a full partner. In 1894, he assumed full ownership of the business, and his decendents have continued to operate the store until the present day. In 1952, the store was recognized as being the oldest in the state still operated by the same family. The business is currently operated by George Romero, a cousin to the Salazar family. Gate inscription recording statues to Honorius and Arcadius, emperors. Rome, Porta Tiburtina. 401-402.

S(enatus) p(opulus)q(ue) R(omanus) / impp(eratoribus) Caess(aribus), dd(ominis) nn(ostris), invictissimis principib(us) Arcadio et Honorio, victorib(us) ac triumfatorib(us), semper Augg(ustis), / ob instauratos urbi(s) aeternae muros, portas ac turres egestis [inmensis] ruderibus [[---]] / [[---]] ad perpetuitatem nominis eorum simulacra constituit. /[---] v(iro) c(larissimo), praef(ecto) urbi, d(evotus) n(uminni) m(aiestati)q(ue) eorum.

'The Senate and People of Rome set up these statues (simulacra) to the emperors [and] Caesars, our lords [and] most invincible rulers, Arcadius and Honorius, victorious and triumphant, forever Augusti, because of the restoration of the walls, gates, and towers of the Eternal City, with the removal of immense ruins ... for the perpetuation of their name. ... of clarissimus rank, prefect of the City, devoted to their divine spirit and majesty.'

The inscription records the dedication of statues to the emperors, on the occasion of the completion of the Honorian works on the Aurelianic wall. The text was carved directly into the travertine curtain, and would not be readable unless the letters were painted.

Coates-Stephens 2001, 234 suggested that the reference to the immense ruins removed (l. 3) could be an allusion to the debris left by the demolitions carried out during the original construction of the wall, in the late third century. The material would have been incorporated into the Honorian heightening of the whole structure.

CIL VI, 1190 includes a line break in l. 4, between 'eorum' and 'simulacra'. This was corrected by Alföldy and Kruse, in CIL VI, p. 4344. The reference to the intervention of Stilicho (ll.3-4) and the involvement of the prefect Longinianus were erased, presumably after Stilicho fell from grace in 408. Longinianus, however, still had a successful career (PLRE II, 686-687 Longinianus).

Filipino World War II Veteran Arcadio Calabas, 90, of Chicago, Ill., joined the Philippine Commonwealth Army as a Lt. in July 1941. He was part of the Bataan Death March and lived in the concentration camp for 6 months. Calabas has been supporting the Filipino veterans equity bill, S1315, which was proposed by Congressman Bob Filner, in hopes for other veterans to receive military benefits such as life insurance, education, and disability benefits. The S1315 bill passed in the Senate in April 2008, but didn't pass through the House September 2008. This bill has been the furthest it's gone. Out of the 67 countries who fought alongside with the US during World War II, the Philippines was the only country whose military benefits were taken away from them. "It's very painful... the most agonizing pain that we have been suffering from since 1946," Calabas says. Philippines was a US colony during the war, but when they claimed their independence, Pres. Truman passed a rescission act, which stated that Filipinos were no longer US nationals and took away their benefits.
