"Bournemouth - the internationally famous seaside resort on the South Coast of England - for over 20 years the town of ACSE" (The Anglo Continental School of English was founded in 1950). Photographed before the Pier Approach flyover was opened in 1972.

Postally unused (c.1971).

Berkshire and Eastern Railroad train B100 is rounding the curve approaching the junction with the Conn River Line at CPF385on B&E's former Pan Am Railways Freight Mainline, the one time Boston and Maine Fitchburg Division. Berkshire and Eastern is a Genesee and Wyoming owned company that was newly created to act as the neutral third party operator of the former Pan Am Southern property as a condition of the sale of Pan Am to CSX.

Train B100 is the symbol B&E uses for the continuation to Ayer of Norfolk Southern eastbound 264 (intermodal 63rd Street Yard in Chicago to Mechanicville) that used to be known as 22K. The train is led by the standard SD60E which is necessary due to it being one of a small fleet of this model equipped with ACSES for operation on the MBTA property east of Westminster. This train is on borrowed time here because another condition of the sale was NS being granted trackage rights for one pair of premium trains (this one and its westbound counterpart) over CSXT's former Boston and Albany route. These trains will then take the old Delaware and Hudson Albany main to Voorheesville, NY and utilize the connection on to Selkirk Branch which has been rebuilt there. From there they will travel east via Selkirk Yard, the Castelton Bridge and the Berkshire and Boston Subs to Worcester and on up to Ayer. Allegedly that routing will commence within the next year of less, so if you want shots of 'the pig train' on the old Boston and Maine the time is now!

From 1927 until 1969 Greenfield was headquarters for the Fitchburg Division, one of four divisions (along with the New Hampshire, the Portland, and the Terminal Divisions) on the over 2000 mile long system. And this colorful stucco building at the foot of Miles Street once served as division headquarters for the mighty Fitchburg.

Back in its railroad day it was known colloquially as 'Marble Hall' presumably as a slight to the seemingly autocratic management who ruled from behind their big mahogany desks in smoke filled rooms at the end of long marble hallways. While that grand description may be apt for the corridors of power in New York or Philadelphia on the great eastern trunk lines, it was more wry humor for a frugal New England pike.

Here the Superintendent, Division Engineer and Dispatchers ruled over the heart of the old Boston & Maine controlling two vital mainline routes, the east-west Fitchburg main from Ayer to Mechanicville and on to Rotterdam and the north-south Conn River main stem from Springfield to White River Jct. and all their attendant branch lines.

While the passenger station has been gone for nearly a half century this structure, long since repurposed, remains in its same position continuing to observe the daily passage of a half dozen Berkshire and Eastern Railroad freights on the modern Fitchburg.

One of the easier to identify manifests of the B&A; M426, passes the iconic Steaming Tender restaurant in Palmer, Massachusetts.

This train typically has an ACSES equipped leader as that kind of PTC is required to run over the Keolis shared portions of the former Pan Am lines. The high abundance of 50ft boxcars and empty centerbeams going east are also another giveaway.

The bright side of this bridge is near impossible to shoot with vegetation coming right up along the main, so I figured a darksider from the west side would do.

CSX Lawrence based local L059 (Former PAR LA-3) is seen here spotting cars for Siegel Egg Company in North Billerica, MA. Armed with what is probably the best switching engine with ACSES still wearing Pan Am colors, MEC 505. A former Canadian National built GP40-2LW. It’s unknown how long CSX will keep these engines around, but they’re nothing to take for granted.

As 23K crests Belden Hill the usual power for the Binghamton to Ayer leg is starting to be boring for line regulars. As they are the only engines on NS's entire roster equipped with ACSES technology for MBTA's service area.

Berkshire & Eastern SAED screams west through downtown Shirley on the sunny afternoon after Christmas 2024. Leading the way past counterpart train EDSA was NS 6942, an EMD SD60E equipped with ACSES PTC to lead over MBTA territory to Westminster.

Berkshire & Eastern MOED rolls eastward past the Hoosick Junction upgrade works taking place at Sewer Plant Road in Hoosick Falls on a sunny late-March afternoon in 2025. Leading the way to Massachusetts was NS 6953, one of several EMD SD60Es equipped with ACSES PTC to lead over MBTA territory.

What's more "New England" than Dunkin' Donuts, and the P&W? Not much, bro.

Providence and Worcester B39-8 #3902, and GP38-2 #2008 perform a CABS and ACSES test with their engineer while the conductors iced coffee begins to melt as he gets their paperwork together.

Berkshire & Eastern MOED ducks under the high car detector at CPF-466 in Mechanicville on a gloomy mid-November evening in 2024. Leading the way to Massachusetts would be NS 6958, an EMD SD60E equipped with ACSES PTC to lead over MBTA territory.

Just a crappy photo perfect for a middle of the night upload while everyone is sleeping! But I like to document at least one shot from each spot no matter how bad just for the journal.

Other than East Portal there are a few other classic locations on the west end that everyone does but with speeds up on the railroad post Pan Am and slow conditions on the roads we couldn't catch back up to them for the Zoar or Charlemont shots. With so many trees along the banks of the Deerfield River there are virtually no open shots anymore. We tried this side of the road grab shot since there was an obstructed whole good for about one unit.

Berkshire and Eastern Railroad train B100 is near East Charlemont at about MP 403 on the former Pan Am Freight Main, the one time Boston and Maine Fitchburg Division. Berkshire and Eastern is a Genesee and Wyoming owned company which is newly created to act as a neutral third party operator of the former Pan Am Southern property as a result of the sale of Pan Am Railways to CSX.

Berkshire & Eastern B100 skirts the bank of the Hoosic River at the famous curve in Pownal on a gloomy early-May afternoon in 2025. Leading the way east into New England was NS 6959, an EMD SD60E equipped with ACSES PTC to lead over MBTA territory in Massachusetts.

Berkshire & Eastern B101 rolls west at the Howland Avenue crossing just east of Mechanicville on a nice mid-May afternoon in 2025. Leading the way from Massachusetts was NS 6957, an EMD SD60E equipped with ACSES PTC to lead over MBTA territory near Ayer.

Berkshire & Eastern B101 accelerates out of North Adams across the small bridge spanning the Hoosic River on a gloomy early-May evening in 2025. Leading the way towards Mechanicville was NS 6952, an EMD SD60E equipped with ACSES PTC to lead over MBTA territory around Ayer.

CSX Framingham local B721 switches Houghton Chemical, located off the Loop Track at Beacon Park Yard in Allston, MA. One of many things this customer produces is aircraft deicer, used at nearby Logan Airport. With the sale of the yard, this customer was forced to abandon rail service all together and now their product is shipped by trucks. It was rare (at the time) to see a GP38-2 based in Framingham as the 6200 series GP40-2's usually dominate since they are equipped with cab signals at ACSES.
