By 2014, nearly 20 years after becoming a part of the Union Pacific, a handful of road locomotives could still be found wearing the colors of the Chicago and Northwestern. Of these the most notable were the 'dynamic duo' a pair of C&NW C44-9Ws (8646 and 8701) that were still unpatched and thus true C&NW motors. Although much of their later years found them in captive service in the Chicago area, late July 2014 found C&NW 8646 almost improbably leading a westbound double stack train to SoCal.
A blisteringly hot day in the Mojave Desert had given way to overcast gloom that foreshadowed an approaching thunder storm, yet a scant trace of sunlight finds the 8646 as it leads its charge towards Cajon Pass. The second locomotive in the consist UP 9676 also traces its heritage to the C&NW, starting life as C&NW 8612.
The day of the C44-9W on the UP has almost certainly ended, as has C&NW yellow and green survivors on the mainlines of the Union Pacific. On that toasty July afternoon however, 8646 reminded those along the way that the Chicago and Northwestern was not dead yet!
