Opportunities of getting Great Western motive power locally on home territory are limited these days compared to when I first started out in this hobby all those years ago. While I wouldn't describe myself as a steam fanatic, I will go out on impulse if I feel up for the challenge.
On a hazy evening, 7029 "Clun Castle" (with 37240 on the rear) strides across the Somerset Levels with the 1Z41 17.00 Minehead (ex. 18.40 off Bishops Lydeard)-Birmingham New Street "Whistling Ghost" excursion. The local landmark of Brent Knoll hillfort features in the background.

Бывшее коровье хозяйство за деревней Головырино - лет 20 назад я проехал мимо него в поисках черники.. С дороги там виднелись постройки, ветерок нёс навозную вонищу, стадо бродило в поле, а пастух на лошади охранял коровушек. И вот, теперь всё наоборот: я бросаю собирать чернику, прячу велик, и иду по лесам и болотам искать тот скотный двор. Дренажные каналы, бетонные стенки и виадуки, защищавшие от воды лесные дороги - всё это заросло, запрудилось бобрами, и заболотилось. Хоть и брошенное людьми, а всё равно красивое и хорошее, и как будто еду я на стареньком Урале, а пастух мне машет и улыбается.
Два часа побегал, но черники 6,5 литров всё равно набралось, одно другому не мешает))

Rock Ferry station on the Great Western route to the North West. In early 1967, there were still six through trains on weekdays between Birkenhead Woodside and London Paddington but in March of that year, the route was effectively curtailed at Wolverhampton Low Level as a result of the introduction of electric trains on the LMS line. Several special steam hauled trains were run including this one hauled by Castle class No 7029 CLUN CASTLE...
