I shot in DX mode which crops away the extra pixels and takes me 1.5X closer while allowing for up to 7 FPS with the Nikon D810's Nikon MB-D12 Battery Grip using the 8 AA battery option! 8 Duracels took me through around 3,000 shots no problem--maybe more! I was shooting at the equivalent of 900mm with the 1.5x crop factor! Pretty close! Had I gone with the Nikon D4s, I would have gotten 12 fps, but no DX crop factor, as the sensor has only around 14mp, compared to the d810's 36 megapixels! Sure the larger pixel size on the Nikon D4s full frame sensor comes in handy indoors or at night, but in the bright sun, there's more than enough light for the smaller pixels in crop mode! Sure we lose some pixels from the outer edges when shooting in DX crop mode, but most of those pixels would be cropped away in lightroom anyway. And the smaller files make the memory cards last longer, while also upping the FPS to 7 shots per second! Not quite 12 FPS, but still awesome and enough I felt!

What a beautiful way to test the Nikon D810 and Tamron 150-600mm zoom lens for sports photography!

View your artistic mission into photography as an epic odyssey of heroic poetry! Take it from Homer in Homer's Odyssey: "Tell me, O muse, of that ingenious hero who travelled far and wide after he had sacked the famous town of Troy. Many cities did he visit, and many were the nations with whose manners and customs he was acquainted; moreover he suffered much by sea while trying to save his own life and bring his men safely home; but do what he might he could not save his men, for they perished through their own sheer folly in eating the cattle of the Sun-god Hyperion; so the god prevented them from ever reaching home. Tell me, too, about all these things, O daughter of Jove, from whatsoever source you may know them. " --Samuel Butler Translation of Homer's Odyssey

Epson R-D1x with Leitz Hektor 2.8cm 1:6,3 wide angle LTM lens. The Hektor has five uncoated lenses in three groups. The aperture is only 6,3.

Despite the short focal length and small aperture, sharpness is rather bad. Probably, this tiny lens doesn't perform well on a digital camera. I also tested it on a Barnack, but the film hasn't been scanned yet.

This lens delivers a rather low contrast, at least with a digital camera. Significant post-processing is required to enhance the contrast, but that reduce the detail in colour and shading. Again, I need to see what the results on film look like.

I do not see any chromatic aberration nor distortion, but then again, this test was done on a digital camera with an APC-C sensor that doesn't exploit the full FOV.

I'm slowly working my way around the car. I've moved a foot or so from the wheel (Shots here and here) to the badge on the front left wing.

I'm enjoying using the single strip box with a mask, effectively making it a 130cm x 15cm sliver of light. It brings out the shape of the body work so nicely. I also positioned the light so that it's reflection completely filled the front face of the badge.

Osaka VW45FC, Osaka 120mm f/6.3, Old Workhorse Collodion (6 weeks old)

f/11, 6 seconds (estimated)

My first wet plate outside of a building. Took along the BastardBox I've been working on. First plate was a bust because the gel I used on top was not darkroom safe. I removed the gel and just used a big sheet of duvetyne over my head. Worked fine. Here I wanted to see what a lens flare would look like with collodion. Not much different than film, haha.

This being my first batch of collodion ever, I'm still working out the kinks as they happen. I didn't notice until I was on location all the floaties that had formed in my developer mixed 6 weeks ago. I'm not sure if the fog was due to that or if I was simply underexposing and overdeveloping. Maybe a combination.

I shot in DX mode which crops away the extra pixels and takes me 1.5X closer while allowing for up to 7 FPS with the Nikon D810's Nikon MB-D12 Battery Grip using the 8 AA battery option! 8 Duracells took me through around 3,000 shots no problem--maybe more! I was shooting at the equivalent of 900mm with the 1.5x crop factor! Pretty close! Had I gone with the Nikon D4s, I would have gotten 12 fps, but no DX crop factor, as the sensor has only around 24mp, compared to the d810's 36 megapixels! Sure the larger pixel size on the Nikon D4s full frame sensor comes in handy indoors or at night, but in the bright sun, there's more than enough light for the smaller pixels in crop mode! I get asked a lot of questions (I love questions--ask away!), and one of the more common ones is "What kind of camera shoul I buy?" Begin with anything, and then, when it falls short of the beauty you are trying to capture, invest in a new one! The important thing is to think of it as buying not something for yourself, but a gift for the world, who will witness all the magnificent photos you shoot with it! Then, the next most important thing to do is to shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot! For each and every epic shot on an awesome camera helps justify its cost! I shoot with the awesome Nikon D810, Sony A7R, and now the Sony A7RII! And in the long run, the cost of the camera is a very small entity, when conpared to the cost of life and time. So buy a great camera, and then give the gift of epic photography to the world!

An ancient saying claimed that in the veins of the bresciani runs gasoline instead of blood.

The innate passion for racing took life in cities already at the end of the 19th century:

from 1895 to 1898 in Italy were held only three racing, but in 1899 the races were well.

The first appearance of a racing vehicle in the territory of Brescia took place on March 14, 1899, during Verona-Brescia-Mantova-Verona: to win, on board a tricycle Prinetti and mortars, was that Ettore Bugatti ...

The bresciani, although involved in the Organization, took a race across them. They decided to organize immediately two, who first took the 10 September and the second the following day.

Sunday was disputed on the ring road of town 6 miles-apart from a motorcycle race-the race car of Speed-Brescia; on Monday took away the Brescia-Mantova-Verona-Brescia, with 223 km path.

Motoring vocation is witnessed by the six manufacturers of cars which arose in Brescia in the early twentieth century.

In 1904 he prepared the circuit of Brescia, on the roads that connect the route Brescia-Cremona-Mantova-Brescia, for a total of 185 miles from repeat twice.

The first race was held on September 5, 1904 on the occasion of the week of Brescia.

The following year the "week" was replicated and the September 9, 1905 at Brescia was played the first Coppa Florio.

Until after the first world war were not held in Brescia other competitions, but the shooting was great. Thanks to the adozioneArturo of Brescia the city Merchants had to organize the Grand Prix of Italy, who was posted in a wide range of events held under the name International diCircuito

Automotive-plane, in 1921. In addition to "Kilometer Launched", and other races for minor categories, the most attention was of course centered on the new circuit of Brescia, also called golden belt Loop, name of the place where it was given the go-ahead, 4 September, at 1° Italy Grand Prix.

In 1922, with great disappointment of the bresciani, merchants opened the Monza Autodrome, where Italy Grand Prix is still disputed.

The passion for engines had prompted bresciani a their Automobile Club as early as 1906, until the section in 1926.C. Milan.

On the basis of the new order of the Royal Automobile Club of Italy, implemented by Royal Decree of November 14, 1926-which also introduced ilPubblico Vehicles, the PRA, the Automobile Club di Brescia was officially formed.

The January 18, 1927 opened his headquarters in Corso Magenta, where she immediately beginning the organizational activity of the first Coppa delle Mille Miglia.

The name Mille Miglia and the brand with the red arrow, from that day, remain inalienable property of the Automobile Club Brescia.

Since its founding, has been kept alive a tradition which identifies the ACI Brescia among sports associations, not only at national level.Brescia circuit, circuit del Garda, Brescia-Edolo-Pontedilegno, climbing the Colle s. Eusebio, Lumezzane, Hillclimb del Monte Maddalena, are just some of the competitions organised by the Club, continuing the work and passion of the great Renzo Castagneto.

For these reasons, the Automobile Club di Brescia will never regardless of race and will produce maximum effort to maintain this immense heritage of bravery and ingenuity who wrote unforgettable pages of history.

Between the roles of ACI Brescia there is also to preserve the tradition of Brescia and motoring that immense heritage of cultural, human and sports consists of the competitions that were held on the territory of Brescia from 1899 to the present.

Also this year, the A.C. Brescia has maintained three races on the calendar, the Rally 1000 Miglia, the International Hillclimb Vallecamonica-Trophy Malegno-Ossimo and Borno-Rally Ronde ACI Brescia.

White-cheeked Bushtit (Aegithalos leucogenys) captured at Margalla, Islamabad, Pakistan with Canon EOS 7D Mark II

After the fight-and ultimatley defeat-of the Varli demon, we were exhausted beyond reproach. The fight had utterly drained poor Valanthe of every ounce of strength within her. It was the firt time I had ever seen her this way, and it hurt me. I knew her magicks drained her but I had no idea of its limits. Yet even with out exhuastion, we also knew hat we could not stay here and become easy picking for some of other fell beast. So Taurox carried Valanthe and we set off as fast as our tired legs could take us.

We walked, leaving behind Shardrake City, leaving behind the Northern Reaches. We continued walking untl we could no longer see the black river that was the Shardrake Highway. For at least a day and a half we walked.

Finally, in a remote area of the Aswar Plains we found the remains of an old farmhouse. Its land, once fertile and thriving was now a ravaged dustbowl. Skeltal remains of the farms livestock were littered about, long picked clean by scavengers. Taurox lay Vaane down and she was soon asleep. He offered to take up watch while we all slept but I told him that was not necessary.

"We all need rest," I told him. "I think we will be alright."

He nodded in silent assent and we were all soon asleep...

And we slept for nearly two days. We awoke to find we were all still alive and well and our gear had been undisturbed. We had a light meal and rationed out some water.

"What do we do now?" Grim asked as he sat, cleaning his weapon.

I looked to Valanthe, who shrugged her shoulders. My gaze went to Taurox, who nodded.

"It seems we have some things to discuss," he remarked.

"I agree," I said, taking a seat.

We gathered around a rusting metal barrell and talked long into the day, until at last a descion was made.

And here're some epic video of pretty goddess Alanna Blanchard I shot at the same time with the Panasonic X900MK 3MOS 3D Full HD SD Camcorder with 32GB Internal Memory mounted on my Nikon D800E via the 45surfer configuration.

Last year I was shooting with a Nikon D4 with a 600mm F4 Prime monster Nikkor lens mounted on the tripod:

www.flickr.com/photos/herosjourneymythology45surf/8555104...

This year I wanted to be more nimble and work the whole area (shoot surfers warming up down the beach, coming and goring, running, hanging out/watching/etc.), so I opted to shoot with a Nikon D800E with the Sigma 150-500m lens mounted on a monopod. It can be tough to move tripod around with a 600mm F4 Prime monster Nikkor lens on a crowded beach, and it would be easy to upset folks each time you tried to set it up! There's a good chance they would say "enough" and throw you and all your equipment in the water! There's a common etiquette that one ought arrive early to claim a good spot, set up there, and keep it for the day. Latecomers are not welcome to set up on the main beach once it has filled up. But it's OK to walk around with a smaller setup as long as you stay out of everyone's way. Generally you can hug the water/shoreline with your feet and monopod in the water, as you're down low enough so that you don't block anyone's view from higher up on the beach, where all the tripods are mounted. The Sigma 150-500mm lens also allowed me to zoom out when surfers ran down the beach or got in and out of the water, and I also had a Nikon D800E with the 28-300 mm lens strapped around my neck. And both cameras had video cameras mounted to them in my famous 45surfer configuration! Needless to say, it can be a bit scary standing knee-deep in water with all that equipment, with large waves breaking. You wouldn't want to fall in!

Well, hope you enjoy the surf goddess photography!

All the best on your epic hero's journey from Johnny Ranger McCoy! :)

P.S. There's nothing like shooting the nikon D4 with the 600mm prime for quality, but I felt it was cool to give up a bit of quality for far more variety this year! Plus I do not want to become a pixel-peeper! :)
