The Kirk Hotel Building (the West Fayette side). This and other nearby buildings were owned at one time by William Kirk, a wagon maker who later became one of the wealthiest men in Syracuse after investing in railroad stock. The residential hotel was one of many hotels and boarding houses built in response to the thriving railroad activities in the area. Although most of the building was constructed around 1870, the top floor was added in 1910, and part of the facade fronting South Clinton Street was ornamented with Neo-Classical Revival elements of pressed metal. Fine brickwork and ornate window surrounds are architectural remains of this once Italianate building. Located in the Armory Square area at 127-29 West Fayette Street in Syracuse, NY. (S4/41)
I'm heading south on Highway 41, just south of the junction with Highway 33 about 12 miles south of both Avenal and Kettleman City. The highway will soon cross the Diablo Range, visible up ahead. Winter is the rainy season in California and grass grows everywhere. During the summer it is completely brown, not a single green blade of grass would be found here.
My uncle Bill's first car, a 1941 Chevy, has been in the family for half a century. It's spent the last half of that sitting in the shed behind his parents' garage providing shelter and warmth for generations of raccoons, woodchucks, and other creatures. Rumor has it that its days are now numbered, so I wanted to capture some of its character before it leaves home for the last time.
The lighting in this shot is natural via a large hole in the roof of the shed.
