When you're alone, and life is making you lonely

You can always go

Downtown

When you've got worries, all the noise and the hurry

Seems to help, I know

Downtown

Just listen to the music of the traffic in the city

Linger on the sidewalk where the neon signs are pretty

How can you lose?

No I don't think

It's for nothing

But I hope someday we're gonna get it back

Tomorrow is closed

There's no future at all

We've burned it all down

Down to the ground

I saw it written on the bathroom wall

I've lost my place

We all have

But I hope someday we're gonna get it back

In my own time I’ll get a little older

The wind is in the chimes

In my own time I’ll write until I know you

In bold and underline

In my own time I’ll brighten up the corners

Temporarily

Fix up the paint and straighten all the pictures

That hang around like me

Adults of the common cockchafer reach sizes of 25–30 mm; the forest cockchafer is a little smaller (20–25 mm). The two species can best be distinguished by the form of their tail end: it is long and slender in the common cockchafer, but shorter and knob-shaped at the end in the forest. Both have a brown colour.

Male cockchafers have seven "leaves" on their antennae, whereas the females have only six.

Cissopis leverianus (Magpie tanager / Tángara urraca)

I think this photo holds the record for the highest elevation above sea level where this bird has been seen. It is usually found in warm places at low altitude.

The magpie tanager (Cissopis leveriana) is a South American species of tanager. It is the only member of the monotypic genus Cissopis. As suggested by its common name, this blue-black and white species is superficially reminiscent of a European magpie. With a total length of 25–30 cm (10–12 in), a large percentage of which is tail, it is the longest species of tanager. It weighs 69-76 g.

It is widespread in humid tropical and subtropical woodland, plantations, second growth, and parks in South America east of the Andes. It is largely restricted to lowlands, but occurs up to an altitude of 2,000 m (6,600 ft) on the east Andean slopes.

Long Eared Owl - Asio Otus

Double click to view

Long-eared owls inhabit dense vegetation close to grasslands, as well as open forests shrub lands. They are common in tree belts along streams of plains and even desert oases. They can also be found in small tree groves, thickets surrounded by wetlands, grasslands, marshes and farmlands,

It nests in trees, often conifers using old sticks from other nest. Breeding season is from February to July, average clutch 4-6 eggs and the incubation time averages 25-30 days. Owlets begin to explore the nest and close branches around 3 weeks and are capable of flight from 5 weeks, they still rely on being fed for up to 2 months. Long-eared owls usually begin breeding at 1 year.

Another shot from the archives and one of my first “Big Glass” shots. Taken in April of 2017 and on my first trip into the woods lugging around my then new 600mm lens…an investment that was years in the making! I had decided to go off trail at Muscatatuck NWR in search of roosting owls. An hour or so in I noted a huge cavity in a large tree…a perfect home for something! I found a spot away from the surrounding stickers and set up to see what might be inside.

The bottom rim of the orifice was well worn, a great indication of activity. I decided to sit for a bit and wait. After twenty minutes or so of keeping an eye on a hole in a tree, I decided I was wasting my day and stood up from my comfortable spot at the base of a large oak tree. Just as I stood and started extending out my monopod leg, something caught my eye flying through the woods. I believe the large tree him me from him perfectly as he threw on the airbrakes and made an emergency landing on a large limb maybe 25-30 yards away.

We both just staired at each other for what felt like an eternity as I feared that as soon as I pointed my lens at him, he would take flight. Surprisingly, he just sat and looked around and at me, as if wondering what the hell I was doing off the popular trail. I took several dozen shots, gave him a nod with my head and thanked him aloud for being so kind. I then walked away at an angle that showed I meant no harm.

Having something that you are searching for come to you is such a gift.

During the peak of summer, a few days after the national COVID lockdown was lifted, I braved out to the wild exploring the nearby hotspots. The police checked my vehicle, but didn't stop since I was alone and it was like 530 AM. And I had a whale of a time. 4 hours of birding sitting on the dried banks with a tripod.

Some 25-30 Flamingoes showed up in the lake along with some 1000 other birds, mostly common ones. When a kite hunting for chicks disturbed the birds, the Flamingoes took off giving me an opportunity I dreamt off for a long time to get a shot of them in flight. They made a big roundabout and landed in the same place again.

Thanks in advance for your views and / or feedback. Much appreciated.

Lucky to have a bit of sunshine this morning!

This series has an interesting story! Last year Jan. in the afternoon Dad was outside, doing some work, it was too hot, so I asked him to come inside n take rest. He refused and contd. so thought of preparing some juice for him, I heard some unusual chaos of birds, about 25-30 birds of diff. sps were flying frantically. When saw, I thought this chick was entangled in vines, so thought of helping it with a stick. It was about 12-15 ft up, so climbed a ladder, but then I realized it was caught by vine snake :( This snake is very slender, its girth is as that of my finger, it caught this poor Bulbul, but swallowing was not easy. This bird tried to escape, but died soon, the snake struggled long time to gulp it down and when realized it could be fatal, spat at me and vanished :(

The long-eared owl's (Asio otus or Strix otus) breeding season is from February to July. This bird is partially migratory, moving south in winter from the northern parts of its temperate range. Its habitat is forest close to open country. Overall, these owls are secretive, and are rarely seen.

It nests in trees, often coniferous, using the old stick nests of other birds such as crows, ravens and magpies and various hawks. The average clutch size is 4–6 eggs, and the incubation time averages from 25–30 days. It will readily use artificial nesting baskets. An unusual characteristic of this species is its communal roosting in thickets during the winter months. The young have a characteristic call, likened to a rusty hinge.

The long-eared owl hunts over open country by night. It is very long winged, like the similar short-eared owl, and glides slowly on stiff wings when hunting. Its food is mainly rodents, small mammals, and birds. In Europe it faces competition from the tawny owl and is most numerous in localities where the tawny is absent, notably in Ireland, where the long-eared is the dominant owl; it can occasionally be seen even in Dublin city centre.

Males occupy nesting territories first and may begin their territorial calling in winter. Nesting occurs mainly from mid March through May. During courtship, males perform display flights around nests. Display flights involve erratic gliding and flapping through the trees with occasional single wing claps. Females respond by giving their nest call. The female selects a nest by hopping around it, while the male displays above. She then performs display flights as well, and flies repeatedly to the nest. Leading up to mating, the male approaches the female after calling and performing display flights, then waves his wings as he sidles up to her. Mutual preening and courtship feeding also occur. After pairing, adults roost close together, but the female tends to roost on the nest after it has been selected.

Long-eared Owls hunt mainly by ranging over open rangeland, clearings, and fallow fields. They rarely hunt in woodlands where they roost and nest. They hunt mainly from late dusk to just before dawn, flying low to the ground (1-2 m), with the head canted to one side listening for prey. When prey is spotted, the Owl pounces immediately, pinning the prey to the ground with its powerful talons. Smaller prey is usually swallowed immediately, or carried away in the bill. Larger prey is carried in the talons.

Long-eared Owls feed primarily on mammals. In most areas voles are the most common prey, but deer mice are the most important prey in other areas. In southwestern deserts, pocket mice and kangaroo rats are primary foods. Other mammal prey includes squirrels, bats, chipmunks, gophers, shrews, moles, and cottontail rabbits. Birds are also taken, occasionally on the wing. Most bird prey are smaller species that occur on or near the ground. Bird prey includes meadowlarks, blackbirds, juncos, Horned Larks, doves, bluebirds, and thrashers. Larger birds such as grouse and screech-Owls are occasionally taken. Long-eared Owls sometimes eat insects, frogs, and snakes.

Pellets are fairly large, about 5.1x1.9 cm. They are oval or cylindrical, greyish, and compact with many bones, skulls, and teeth. They are regurgitated 3 to 4 hours after eating.

As seen from The Bluffs Loop
