Back in the mid-1800s, pioneering Virginia engineer Claudius Crozet led the project that carved a mile-long tunnel through Afton Mountain in the Blue Ridge from hamlet of Afton to the Shenandoah Valley town of Waynesboro, thus opening up the entire Great Valley of Virginia to the railroad. The Claudius Crozet Blue Ridge Tunnel is now a rails-to-trails park, and my son, John, and I and his dog, Sebastian, took a walk from one end of it to the other and back recently. Little has been done to make it more than the hole in the mountain that it is (there aren't even any lights inside, so you must bring a flashlight) but it has proven to be a very popular attraction. ©2023 John M.
