Acqua alta - Flooded Venice

Every year the sea flood drowns Venice, that's one of the climate change disasters.

November 13-14, 2020

Two people have died in Venice as the highest water levels for more than 50 years caused hundreds of millions of euros of possibly irreparable damages.

Venice was submerged by choppy water as the highest tide since 1966 hit the city leaving tourists and locals to wade through the streets and in St Mark's Square. A flood alarm sounded across the city when the 'acqua alta,' or high waters, peaked at six feet (1.87 metres). Venice’s mayor, Luigi Brugnaro, said he would declare a state of disaster for the city. He blamed the climate crisis and said it was 'a wound that will leave a permanent mark.'

More than 85% of Venice was flooded, including the historic St Mark’s basilica and other important buildings.

Venice sits on thousands of wooden piles driven into the mud, but rising sea levels and heavy cruise ship traffic have steadily eaten away at the surrounding marshes and mudbanks, causing the city to gradually sink.
