Was the castle in the way?
Conwy Castle pre-dates these 3 bridges by over 500 years so it begs the question "was its location an inconvenience". The castle was largely completed around 1287, probably securing a strategic crossing point. Thomas Telford's suspension bridge was completed in 1826 and is one of the first of its kind in the world. However, part of its structure is built into the castle wall, indeed part of the castle was demolished to make way for it. Today it is a pedestrian crossing. To the right is Robert Stephenson's rail bridge, completed in 1848. To the left is the rather uninspiring road bridge, built in 1958. Though much of the traffic is now relieved by the Conwy Road Tunnel, also the first of its type in the UK and completed in 1991, the result is that the majestic castle is inelegantly sandwiched between a railway and a road. That's town planning for you!
