Joe

Joe was standing on the southeast corner of Lake and State, just outside the revolving door. He was actively soliciting people as they entered and exited. "I'm just hungry and looking for something to eat", he said. He's been out here for two years and is hoping his housing comes through. He sleeps on the train at the moment. "My wife and I split up and I've been lost out here", he said. Nonetheless, he was friendly and good-natured. I gave him my last dollar and he hesitated and said, "I don't want to take your last dollar", and offered it back to me. "It belongs to you", I said. It says a lot about his character that in his deepest need, he's still thinking of others.
