Stephen B Whatley has always loved the classic films and their stars of The Golden Age of Hollywood; an enduring interest since his teens.
In 1981 he began researching and contacting some of the legendary survivors - he was fascinated with the idea of penetrating the celluloid cast of fame and whenever possible touching the hearts of the stars - of the people- with his art; in particular with cartoon tributes that he would create as gifts, out of his admiration.
In 1992 Elizabeth Taylor celebrated her 60th birthday with a star-studded party at Disneyland, California, USA; and hearing of the party plans, Stephen created a surprise birthday card featuring Elizabeth, her husband Larry Fortensky and their friend Michael Jackson.
Ms Taylor was so delighted that she sent Stephen the above message in March 1992. In 1994 her Los Angeles office contacted the artist to commission from him a series of cartoon tributes, for her Elizabeth Taylor AIDS foundation. His reference material supplied by Elizabeth Taylor included the charity logo; as featured here in one of the illustrations.
Ink & crayon on paper.
