Lyrebird, Dandenongs, Australia, 1935 - State Library of New South Wales
Lyrebird, Dandenongs, Victoria, Australia, 1935
This photo of ‘James’ the lyrebird was taken by Miss Una Riall in Sherbrooke Forest, in Victoria's Dandenong Ranges. James held a special attraction for ornithologists as he had an unusual tolerance for humans and performed regularly at the cottage of Mrs Wilkinson. Una Riall was one of Australia’s first trained social workers and while she was visiting Mrs Wilkinson may be the first to capture the silhouette of a lyrebird in song. It is slightly blurred due to the movement of the bird in the early morning light.
