W.A.A.A.F.s at Mascot, 4 July 1944 photographed by Ivan Ives
The final assault on Japan required extending the operations of the RAAF and led to fewer men available for work in many operational areas. The Women's Auxiliary Air Force took over many of these jobs and by 1944 there were 18,000 WAAAFs serving in Australia. In this photo technicians Jean Gray, Isobel Mack, Joyce Tysoe and Constance Black begin their day's work at Mascot airport.
