Crew checking fuselage; First England-Australia flight, Keith and Ross Smith, 1919 - Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia / photographer unknown

Amazingly the Smith brothers flew this early World War I bomber from England to Australia in 1919, in many short hops. Australia was no longer isolated by distance. This photograph is posted today, 19 February 2014, in memory of the huge aerial attack sent against Darwin by the Japanese, which destroyed the Harbour and much of the young city on 19 February 1942, with more bombs than were dropped on Pearl Harbour.

Format: Negative
