Burghley Staff 9855

Burghley House, Stamford. The ground floor of the Brewhouse. This was created to the design of Capability Brown around 1763-9, with the brewing and preparation floor being raised to allow for the accommodation of a storage area at ground level in the C18th.

Designed and built by William Cecil (High Treasurer to Queen Elizabeth 1) between 1555 and 1587. The interiors, with elaborate plaster-work and incredible trompe d'oeil paintings took much longer. The staff areas are much plainer, although the high vaulted ceiling in the kitchen is spectacular. The house is now owned by a charitable trust, though parts are still lived in by the family, and is Grade 1 listed. The house lies just within Cambridgeshire, but the extensive parkland straddles Lincolnshire and Cambridgeshire, with Stamford being the nearest town.
