Former Reichsbahn Depot, Neuwerk, Rübelandbahn, Oct 1995

A sleepy little depot of sawmills and wood finishing for the larger Ausbesserungswerk at Halberstadt which actually used to construct carriages - Reichsbahnausbesserungswerk

für Reisezug- und Güterwagen- for the DR. It still does as a privatised VIS GmbH. (Verkehrs Industrie Systeme) and which has constructed diesel railcars for the nearby Harzer Schmalspurbahnen.

This branch was connected to the Rübelandbahn by an incline, and of course, connected to unique the 25kV AC 50hz supply. By this time, the Deutsche Bahn had taken over all operations in Germany in 1994.

Apparently this was the original Ruebeland Bahnhof, and the final one was known as Ruebeland Tropfsteinhoehlen. Steam Loco 95 6676 "mammut" is now located here and the workshops are open every last Saturday of the months.

Blankenburg itself was the centre of industry relating to railway maintenance and techology (see also the photographic stream at the bottom).
