Satyameva Jayate (सत्यमेव जयते) Sanskrit: "Truth Alone Triumphs". The national motto of India. It is inscribed at the base of the National Emblem (this one is on a Rs. 1 coin). An adaptation of Buddhist Lion Capital of Asoka. Origin of the motto is a well-known mantra from the Mundaka Upanishad.
The motto of the Czech Republic and its predecessor Czechoslovakia, "Pravda vítězí" ("Truth Prevails") has a similar meaning.
Jessica Lall was murdered in front of dozens of eyewitnesses by Manu Sharma, the son of an influential politician, in a party for not serving him a drink. Manu Sharma almost got away in the initial trial in the lower court by threatening or paying off witnesses leaving the country in shocked outrage that brought out thousands of people on the streets to protest against Manu's acquittal with candlelight vigils and silent marches. In the immense uproar that followed, hundreds of thousands of people e-mailed and sms-ed their outrage on petitions forwarded by media channels and newspapers to the President and others seeking remedies for the alleged miscarriage of justice. A poll conducted by the newspaper Hindustan Times showed that on a scale of 1 to 10, the public's faith in law enforcement in India was about 2.7. Under unprecedented public and media pressure in the retrial that followed, on 20th of December 2006, Manu Sharma was awarded life imprisonment by the Delhi High Court and other Accused Vikas Yadav and Amardeep Singh Gill were awarded four years of imprisonment raising hopes for thousands others awaiting Justice in India.
