Srinagar Fortress

This fortress situated on top of a hill in the middle of Srinagar city in Kashmir was built by Mughal Emperor Akbar during the times when entire Kashmir was hit by famine. It is said that by undertaking this project the Mughal Emperor brought employment opportunities to people of Kashmir. The fortress is currently occupied by the Indian Army who have set bunkers on all sides of the fort. The public access to the fortress has therefore been terminated. Fort has been used for multiple purposes in the recent past. At some point in history it served as a prison.
