julian
whenever i walk down guernsey street, i note this utterly weird contraption. made from random bits of discarded ephemera (chair legs, pipes, broom handles and the like), i have always optimistically considered it the artistic endeavor of an obsessively eccentric nutjob.
as it turns out, it is the handiwork of julian. i got excited when i saw him working on it on my way to the post office today, and asked him whether it was for decoration or security. after assuring him that i was not a member of the bloomberg street police, he explained his concern for the spindly pine trees and their tendency to hang over his gate into the airspace above the sidewalk. he was very excited for me to take his portrait, and we got in an argument on the street over his insistence of paying me for this service. he really wanted to take me to lunch at his favorite polish restaurant, but i declined.
