№ 1560 Larkin Street ~ № 1595 Clay Street (1907)

An imposing corner structure set on a raised brick-clad basement into a sloping site. The steeply pitched roof and its multiple intersecting gables add to the sense of verticality; the variety of bays, dormers, and projecting gables, all shingle-clad, impart an arresting visual texture. The clay street facade features a swan neck pediment on rusticated pilasters over the arched entryway. Above this composition are two angled bays, with tapered bases which support a massive projecting broken gable which is also supported by stout, curved, shingled brackets. The broken gable is flanked in turn by projecting intersecting gables over 2 story square bays. Punctuating the intervals between intersecting gables are roof dormers with pitched roofs. The Larkin Street facade features another pattern of gables, roof dormers, a balcony or two, and a pointed arch over a round arched entry way. The detailing suggests variously the first bay tradition, French Revival, Colonial Revival styles, and probably more. -- San Francisco Property Information Map
