Etymology of the word, "Pocket"

In the Middle Ages, both men and women used these pouches to carry personal items, as clothing lacked built-in pockets. These pouches were typically attached to belts for easy access.

As fashion evolved, especially by the late 18th and early 19th centuries, women's clothing became more form-fitting, making it impractical to conceal pouches under garments. This led to the creation of external handbags, known as "reticules," which are considered early forms of the modern purse.

Over time, these functional accessories transformed into fashion statements, leading to the diverse range of purses and handbags we see today. See: www.periodfinery.com/store.php/theveronica/pd10565963/duc...

I enjoy history. Since I also teach English, I also enjoy it as it relates to the origin of words.

Here is a mini-lesson on the word pocket. I hope you also find it interesting.
