Sharples
Thank you for all the likes and comments on the minimalist and Badlands images from my December trip to the Prairies.
My main goal when photographing out there is always to visit old, abandoned grain elevators, to continue working on my Grain Elevator series, so the rest of my images will be of those elevators and abandoned buildings I sometimes find along the way. Snow was falling when shot Sharples elevator, in the beautifully named Knee Hill Creek Coulee, just outside of Drumheller. I've shot this elevator 4 or 5 times, and this is probably my favourite image I've taken there.
The P&H (Parrish and Heimbecker) elevator at Sharples was built in 1923 and closed in 1984. It now stands abandoned. A second, Alberta Pacific Grain, elevator was built nearby in 1927, but has been since torn down.
I've written a short blog post about my trip, if you'd like to read it.
If you'd like, take a look at my other Prairies images, as well as my ongoing project to photograph old, abandoned grain elevators. As well, if you're feeling particularly interested, you can read an essay I wrote for Nathan Wirth's Slices of Silence blog on my feelings of connection to the places I shoot, especially the Prairies.
