The Library at Strawberry Hill, Twickenham (1754)

Strawberry Hill, Twickenham, was built between 1749 to 1776 for Horace Walpole with Wiliam Robinson, and later James Essex as executive architects. The design was developed by the 'committee of taste', Richard Bentley, John Chute, and Walpole himself. Some of the interiors were designed by Bentley, Chute, and, in the 1760s, Thomas Pitt (later Lord Camelford), and Robert Adam. The Library was first devised by Bentley and then revised by Chute of 1754. The elaborate bookcases are formed as a Gothic arcade copied from the side doors to the screen at Old St Paul's. The chimneypiece was based on John of Eltham's tomb in Westminster Abbey. The painted heraldic ceiling was devised by Walpole, drawn by Bentley and painted by Andien de Clermont.
