*All* the mail - TSC

For the Sunday Challenge, "where you put mail." In this case, this is where everyone puts *all* their mail.

 

Champaign-Urbana is home one of the hubs of the internet. There's a decent chance that your email - and your Flickr browsing - dropped by here on the way to you.

 

The top building is the National Petascale Computing Facility. It's the first "petaflop" computer, which means it can do one quadrillion floating point operations per second. That's a lot of email!

 

The administrators of the National Center for Supercomputing Applications are in the building below. Marc Andreessen was at NCSA when he invented the first internet browser, Netscape. These days, you probably access your mail through an internet browser.

 

Fun fact: in "2001: A Space Odyssey," HAL-9000 was born here in 1992.
