Summit City Cemetery

Frequently, when we explore ghost towns, all we find is the cemetery. In this case, there are no original gravestones, but someone is obviously trying to preserve the grave locations. Each grave has a little orange flag, an older metal cross, and / or a new PVC cross. Some have signs or modern markers.

In 1863, trapper Henry Hartley discovered gold here and Summit City was soon founded. Eventually, the name was changed to Meadow Lake. Soon there were over 4000 summer residents and 500 buildings, including a stock exchange, post office, newspaper, school, breweries, and 80 saloons. In 1866-67 there was over 30 feet of snow, and since the eight stamp mills failed to extract much gold, most residents were gone by 1869. By 1873, Hartley was the only one left. He is still here, in this cemetery.
