The Ataris

The Ataris t-shirt on the wall at Chain Reaction in Anaheim.

We went to see The Ataris' Kris Roe, singer, guitarist, and songwriter, do a solo acoustic set that included the entirety of their 1999 album "Blue Skies, Broken Hearts... Next 12 Exits" in order. He also did a handful of songs from "Anywhere But Here", "End Is Forever", "So Long, Astoria", and "Welcome The Night", as well as a medley of "four chord wonders" that included U2's "With Or Without You", Better Than Ezra's "Good", and Green Day's "When I Come Around". He also added bits of Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers' "American Girl" and Eddie Money's "Baby Hold On" to his songs.

During his performance of "Your Boyfriend Sucks", two guys from the audience recited the Robert De Niro and Lillo Brancato dialogue from "A Bronx Tale" that ends the record version of the track. That turned out surprisingly awesome.

Best part of the show:

Between opening acts, Kris Roe was at the merch table and I had an awesome conversation with him about his photography, Long Beach, Douglas Coupland books, and the music of Tom Waits, Jawbreaker, The Replacements, Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers, and Eddie Money. Later, before his performance of "My Hotel Year" (which is based on Coupland's novel Life After God), he dedicated the song to me.

BEST SHOW EVER!
