UK Coal Thoresby Colliery after Closure - 21.vii.2016

This view of UK Coal Thoresby Colliery on 21st July 2016 was taken not long after closure. The open area in the foreground used to provide rail access sidings to the colliery screens - a surviving remnant is visible on the extreme right in the background. They were replaced by the Rapid Loading Bunker out of shot to the right with the introduction of MGR working.

On the right hand set of headstocks can be seen the 'Jewel in the Crown' - a nickname bestowed on the great Bolsover Coal Company's premier productive pit prior to Nationalsation in 1947.

This historic Nottinghamshire colliery was situated in the Dukeries close to the eastern edge of the village of Edwinstowe in Sherwood Forest. It was the last deep coal mine to close - in 2015.

A new housing development called ‘Thoresby Vale’ now occupies much of the colliery site….
