Old Parliament Buildings

Dublin
The old parliament building dates back to 1729. Built as a symbol of the power of the state it survived until the Act of Union. In 1803 it was purchased by the Bank of Ireland. The building fulfilled its function for a mere three decades. Banks liking symbols of continuity and power to demonstrate their sturdiness and solidity the new owner seemed a natural fit. The Bank is likely to be fully nationalised in 2011. It survived 208 years - a somewhat better tally than the parliament.
Dean Swift, writer of Gulliver's Travels, penned the following verse about the parliament from his perspective in Trinity, opposite:
As I stroll the City Oft I,
Spy a Building Tall and Lofty,
Not a Bowshot from the College,
Half the Globe from sense and Knowledge!
