1960 - Woolwich to the 'Palace..

Scruffy GER/LNER N7 0-6-2T 69727 waits at North Woolwich station on September 17, 1960, with the 2:52pm train to Palace Gates..

The tops of dockyard cranes can be seen in the distance..

The loco was withdrawn two months after this photo was taken, and later scrapped. Only one member of the class has survived into preservation.

The service was taken over by DMUs, and cut back to Stratford, and the line later became part of the North London Line, operated by ex-SR third-rail EMUs:

The line finally closed completely in December 2006, and today (2016), the station platforms still exist, but in a derelict state..

Restored from an unfocussed grainy original..

Original slide - property of Robert Gadsdon
