OSSAS 2010 Wedding Cake Competition
This was my 2010 Entry in the Oklahoma State Sugar Art Show in Tulsa. The theme was Mansions and Monasteries. I chose Bebenhausen Monastery in Germany. A floral theme is found throughout the complex, such as the frescoes on many of the ceilings and patterns in the floor tiles and stained glass. There are also beautiful gardens on the grounds.
Tiers 1 and 3 were inspired by the interlocking circles of the Royal Chamber. The King of Wurtemberg lived in the monastery after his abdication. This pattern can also be found in the stained glass windows.
Tiers 2 and 7 were inspired by the exterior architecture and the floral tiles found in the monastery.
Tiers 4 and 6 simply represent the water in the fountain. The overall composition of the cake mimics the shape of the fountain, but upon closer examination the other elements of the monastery complex can be seen.
Tier 5 was inspired by the ceilings in the area around the Gothic bell tower.
A sculpture of the fountain located in the center of the cloister garden, serves as the topper for this cake. The fountain somewhat resembles a multi-tiered cake and has some architectural elements represented, as does the cake.
The handmade seperator stand was inspired by the sturdy pillars and Gothic vaulted ceilings found throughout the complex.
