DCU Shazam! - Issue #2
I wave goodbye to Sharon and the place that has been my home, on-and-off, for almost 11 years. My bittersweet moment is cut into by Victor Vasquez, my new adopted dad. Off to a great start...
Victor Vasquez: “You got all your stuff, pal?”
Billy Batson: “Yeah, it's all there.”
Victor has a strong, tall build, and works for Whiz Radio. From what I've been told, he's kind of a big deal, just like his goatee, a stand-out feature on his.
Victor Vasquez: “Erm well we heard you wanted to keep your paper round?”
I kinda didn't.
Rosa Vasquez: “Yes, unfortunately we're a bit too far away, but I spoke to our paper guy and they said they'd take you in. Isn't that great?!”
Rosa is shorter, but with black hair just like her husband’s, except she has pink coloured tips. She works from home, I think.
Billy Batson: “Sounds good…”
I trail off, and they didn't speak to me for the rest of the journey. They were being too nice, as I hoped they wouldn't be, and I just wanted to be alone. They always put up a false facade when I'm around and think I won't be able to notice it. Every. Damn. Time.
I fell asleep in the car, and woke up with a jolt. Victor had just parked up at the Vasquez household.
Rosa Vasquez: “Billy, we're here!”
The house was nothing special. 4 walls and a roof. I don't really know what I expected, but this place was now my home, and I was hoping it'd work out this time, really hoping for a place to call my own. Maybe this was it. I'd be lying if that didn't get me a bit giddy.
Victor carries my box inside while I trail behind him and Rosa with my backpack.
I walk behind them through the large front door and am immediately surprised by an overwhelming hug. A girl I've never met embraces me as if we're old friends.
Mary Bromfield: “You must be Billy! I'm Mary! So nice to meet you.”
She steps back in between two other teenagers, who take turns to shake my hand.
Freddie Freeman: “Wassup, I'm Freddie”
He's short, grasping a crutch and wearing an old beanie hat. He gives me a janky, awkward smile as I turn to shake the next hand.
Eugene Choi: “I'm Eugene.”
I can tell Eugene isn't very impressed by me. There's probably not a whole lot I can do about that. What did he expect? Me to have a six-pack or something? His handshake is somewhat passive-aggressive, while Freddie's is a lot more relaxed.
Rosa Vasquez: “Well welcome to our home. You're gonna fit right in! Why don't you go put your stuff in Freddie's room? You'll be bunking with him. He can give you the house tour in a bit, before dinner.”
Better Freddie than Eugene, I knew that much immediately.
Billy Batson: “That sounds fine.”
Freddie Freeman: “Don't worry man, we don't have actual bunk beds. Come on, I'm just in here”
As Freddie walks, he seems to be unable to use his left leg. A few of the kids at the Care Home had similar injuries. I wonder why the Vasquez's chose me, out of all the others. I'm nothing special, just a lost cause. A hopeless case. Nothing special at all.
