Red-winged Blackbird (Agelaius phoeniceus), Silvio O. Conte Fish and Wildlife Refuge, Fort-River Division, Hadley, MA, 2024

Glossy black male has red shoulder patches broadly tipped with buffy yellow. In perched birds red patch may not be visible; only the yellow or whitish border shows. Females are dark brown above, heavily streaked below; sometimes show a red tinge on wing coverts or pinkish wash on chin and throat. Abundant, aggressive species.

 

The constant calling out of this low-lying bird to its partner in early Spring made its red patch clearly visible. High pitch vibrations of the wing patch renders it out of focus.
