Red-winged Blackbird (Agelaius phoeniceus), Silvio O. Conte Fish and Wildlife Refuge, Fort-River Division, Hadley, MA, 2024
Glossy black male has red shoulder patches broadly tipped with buffy yellow. In perched birds red patch may not be visible; only the yellow or whitish border shows. Females are dark brown above, heavily streaked below; sometimes show a red tinge on wing coverts or pinkish wash on chin and throat. Abundant, aggressive species.
The constant calling out of this low-lying bird to its partner in early Spring made its red patch clearly visible. High pitch vibrations of the wing patch renders it out of focus.
Nikon D6, Nikkor 500mm f/4e lens, x1.7, f/6.7, 1/500s, ISO 400.
