Langar - Amritsar
Langar - Golden temple, Amritsar.
The golden temple in Amritsar is the most holy place for sikhs. Their religion states that everyone should be equally treated and fed at the langar. This is an amazing place with approx 30,000 people passing through daily all being fed for free. The Langar is staffed completely with volunteers. They prepare, cook, serve and tidy up 24hrs a day, 365 days a year.
A process like this require some automation and there are machines to make chapatis - the Indian flat bread. They also cook using wood as well. I was taken by this elderly Sikh man who looked so laid back cooking his 2 chapatis. Every little helps in this process.
Some of the large cooking vessels can also be seen in the kitchen in the background.
