Stagecoach Oxford L247 FDV
247 (L247 FDV)
Iveco Daily 49-10/Mellor Duet B13D
Preserved, ex Thames Transit (Stagecoach Oxford)
Oxford Bus Museum, 15 April 2007
New to Bayline, Torquay
Oxford in the 1990s became something of a testing ground for battery buses. The Oxford Bus Company had four Southern Electric-sponsored MetroRiders in use on a shuttle service, and Stagecoach later joined in on the act by transferring the two Iveco ElectroBuses from Exeter. The bodywork of these frankly bizarre buses is to Transit Holdings' usual odd dual-door spec but the interior layout is even stranger as the weight of the batteries and the Fiat petrol engine used to charge them meant only 13 passengers could be carried. They were rather unreliable and spent much time out of use, and 247 has ended up on static display at the Oxford Bus Museum as a permanent reminder of this unsuccessful experiment. Amazingly, sister 248 went for further service, albeit rebuilt with diesel power.
