The Algorithm
I recently joined an art challenge that forced me to create an artwork within two weeks, based on another artist’s creation. It was a blast!
The prompt I received was a collage that had pears, and bold colors such as purple, orange, and gold. I was immediately drawn to using the pear as a subject, and with purple being my least favorite color, I challenged myself to use it as the focal point.
🍐
I wanted to present a commentary about artists creating imagery that isn’t them in order to feed the algorithm on Instagram. The pears hanging in the hedges represent their normal work, perfectly healthy and beautiful in their own right. However, the algorithm never picks it.
But when the artist creates something new to match whatever is trendy, even though the quality is substandard in comparison, the algorithm eagerly reaches out to it.
What kind of message does this send to young, emerging, and professional artists? Or the viewers who digest ‘pears’ regularly? Will they let our fruit rot? Or will they enjoy it, regardless of who picks it?
