Mona (soft)
From a photoshoot with Mona.
Mona has a unique look, because of her mixed German/Japanese heritage. She is finishing up college this semester, and is planning on moving to Japan right after that. She studies and works in film production.
To shake things up a bit, and because I thought it would flatter her features, I went with a classic "Rembrandt lighting". I'll also post a "beauty lighting" shot of Mona in my next upload.
I've been getting a lot of ideas on lighting lately from some YouTube videos, especially some by portrait photographer Joel Grimes. What I learned from his videos is that you can get a nice, soft Rembrandt look by placing your softbox at essentially a 90 degree angle to the model, but feathering the light to achieve wraparound. In this shot, the back of the softbox was parallel with Mona's head, while the front extended way out in front of her.
Strobist info: Main: Menik SW400 through 48" octabox, camera left; Fill: 4'x6' white backdrop, camera right; BG light: Yongnuo 560ii through small grid onto gray seamless.
I'm seeing some weird "color banding" on the flickr page. It doesn't seem to be there in my original, so it must be a compression artifact.
