Blood Lion, Etosha National Park, Namibia

A couple of nights ago I saw a heartbreaking documentary on canned lion hunting in South Africa called @bloodlions. These lions are caged, intensively bred and then shot in an enclosure as a bloodthirsty hunter’s #trophy. It’s a legal practice & the numbers around this lucrative industry are staggering. By 2020 we could have 20,000 lions in captivity in SA alone, all bred for the bullet. To put things in context, at the moment there are 20,000 wild lions in the REST of #Africa. I have never understood trophy hunters. How people can feel joy when they kill a majestic creature such as a lion is beyond my understanding. Btw the documentary also features interviews from American trophy hunters who ‘love’ hunting lions and ‘giving these lions a purpose’. Guaranteed to make your blood boil. And to top it off they believe the intensive breeding is actually helping conservation efforts!! Such bullshit!

.

Bleak as it sounds we can do quite a bit to help

1. Say NO to all cub petting opportunities. Ask yourself why are you petting a wild lion? What happened to its parents? What will happen to it when it’s no longer cute and cuddly

.

2. Say NO to all opportunities for ‘walking with lions’. These adolescents lions are all ultimately raised for being a hunter’s trophy, nothing else

.

3. Say NO to all volunteering opportunities which involve you petting cubs or hand raising them. Question the facilities you choose to volunteer at. Don’t be under any illusion, these facilities do not contribute to #conservation as hand raised and human imprinted lions will never be rehabilitated in the wild

.

4. Say NO to all tiger bone and #lion bone artefacts and wine

.

5. Tell friends and family who are travelling to SA, and other places, to AVOID these facilities. To you it’s a selfie with a lion, to the lion it’s a life and death in captivity

.

6. Watch this film and share this message.

.

Lions belong in the wild. Let’s keep them that way
