Museé de l’Orangerie, Gallery (Salle) 1_img 0138
Located in the southwest corner of the Tuileries, the main floor of the museum consists of two oval galleries that were purpose built in consultation with Monet to display his eight expansive Water Lilies paintings--each 2 metres high and almost 17 metres long. Each gallery incorporates plain white walls, a sparse interior and natural lighting provided by a huge translucent skylight.
In his twilight years and with failing eyesight, Monet worked on these masterpieces for 12 years at his home in Giverny, finally completing them shortly before his death in 1926. The galleries, with the paintings installed, were opened the following year.
